John Cappelletti (born August 9, 1952) is an American former football running back who played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Los Angeles Rams and the San Diego Chargers. He played college football for the Penn State Nittany Lions, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1973.In the era before freshman eligibility, Cappelletti was a running back on the freshman team at Penn State in 1970. During his sophomore season in 1971, he played as a defensive back, as the Nittany Lions had two senior running backs who were taken early in the 1972 NFL Draft: Franco Harris (13th overall) and Lydell Mitchell (48th).
